test of skill

I had the golden chance of designing new large format prints for a local history exhibit in Kuusamo. I started at the tail-end of the renovations of the new tourism and cultural center of Kuusamo named "Karhuntassu" (eng. bear claw). I was struck by the magnitude of this project, having just started my 3rd year of studies, I was quite happy to jump in and sink my teeth in my first big project! From the get go I knew I'd have my work cut out for me and fortunately my direct superior and project manager had compiled an extensive collection of background research, plans and mock-ups during the preceding two years for the new exhibition space I was designing for.

made to measure

I began by traveling to Kuusamo and touring the construction site with the project manager, taking measurements of the space and photos for reference. Using the initial measurements, references, design briefs and estimates from the company designing the wooden cabinets (as seen in some of the images) I began work. The project had around two and a half months allotted for my part, so careful time management was of the essence.

all for one

In addition to the mammoth design work, the work also called for co-operation with both the authors of the text materials and the company responsible for the production of the large format prints together with their installation.

a joy and relief

When all was said and done, both during the installation and the opening I was incredibly impressed by the results of - not only my part, but the entire team of people who had worked tirelessly for the better part of three years to bring the new Karhuntassu alive. If you ever have the priviledge of traveling to Kuusamo, do not miss the opportunity to check out Karhuntassu!
